Whether it’s the Lunar1 iterations from 2014 or the Ultra Flyknit editions from 2016, all have managed to resonate with the many factions of footwear fans. Over the 35 or so years since the AM1 was first released, a variety of tooling has been issued by the Swoosh, each highlighting the iconic silhouette in a different light. Other AM1 editions such as Patta ’s “Chlorophyll” from 2009 and Parra’s “Amsterdam” from 2005, remain examples of pinnacle Air Max, respected by sneakerheads both old and new. A decade later in 2017, the shoe was selected to receive a retro thanks to Nike’s Vote Back campaign, a project that proved that the silhouette still remained relevant almost thirty years later. In 2007, Japanese retailer atmos released the “ Elephant ” colourway. There are now countless editions of the Air Max 1, a large majority of which remain highly coveted by sneakerheads. It was a colossal moment in footwear history, not only paving the way for the Air Max line, but has forced other brands to up their game since. Zack Designed by Tinker Hatfield, the Nike Air Max 1 was the first sneaker to offer a window to the sole. The Air Max 1 is one of the greatest sneakers ever, and the mystique of the Air Max line all starts there. To this day, the Nike Air Max 1 continues to achieve big feats of success, another risk from the Swoosh having paid off. 1987 Nike Air Max 1 Air Max sneakers are special due to Tinker Hatfield’s incredible early designs. The Air Max 1 debuted in the Varsity Red and Blue colourways, a far cry from all the neon-coloured trainers that were circulating the running shoe market at the time.The shoe released and people’s minds were blown, it was unlike anything they’d seen before, the visible Air Bag was like something out of a sci-fi movie. Eventually, the shoe made it through the various approval stages, although Nike was still concerned as to what the public would think. Wondering how that would translate onto a shoe, the concept of letting people see the Air Unit suddenly came to him.Īt the time, his sketches of the visible Air Unit were met with huge pushback and almost resulted in him losing his job. Inspired by his visit to Paris, Tinker remembered being stunned by the Pompidou Centre, a building that placed all of its functional and structural elements on the outside. It wasn’t until Tinker was struck by an idea that a solution started to appear. The design team at Nike struggled at first, unable to solve how the new Air Unit would fit into the midsole due to its new smaller size but bigger width. Several years later, Tinker was assigned to work on the next running shoe project. It all started in 1981 when a young Tinker Hatfield was hired as a corporate architect to work on the showrooms and offices of Nike’s expanding campus in Portland. The Air Max 1 released in March 1987, with Nike Employees unsure as to how the public would react.
